Comprised almost entirely of 909 drums and 808 kicks, the record has already earned support from: Floating Points, DBridge, Skrillex, Jasper James, Eclair Fifi, Hudson Mohawke, Dusky, Giant Swan, Gerd Janson, Noisia, Zenker Brothers and more.
Releasing for the first time under a fresh alias, DJ ADHD steps up with ‘Vortex EP’, a 4-track record highlighting the producer’s expansion from 140 and grime as ALXZNDR, part of the DEEP MEDi family, to a refined signature sound positioned within the UK techno realm and its derivatives.
The opener ‘Blem’ takes kinetic percussion and sets it alight with a restlessness all too suited to shapeshifting strobes and peak-time dancefloors. ‘Wobble’ utilises Alex’s UK funky background with giddy bass loops alongside drums that break apart and reassemble intermittently, invoking a sense of being locked in somewhere hostile.
‘Vortex’ is dedicated to the sound system lovers – suspenseful, bass-heavy and eerie in its demeanour, its arrangement dips between dramatic exhalations and stripped-back, broken percussion. The closing ‘Wobble 4x4’ tears apart the original and adds in subtle flair on a 4x4 techno beat, making the most of its blank slate in giving life to soft, menacing ad-libs.
All the tracks are great but Stepper is the standout for me! pounding syncopated kicks, rolling handdrums and playful sample work, dancefloor destroyer. Jack G.
